Mission: Bridging the Gap Through Education

Paper Airplanes is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free, peer-to-peer education to individuals affected by conflict in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. As an Online English Tutor, you will play a transformative role in helping students gain the linguistic skills necessary to pursue higher education, secure employment, and rebuild their lives.

Core Responsibilities & Tutoring Goals

  • One-on-One Instruction: Conducting weekly 60–90 minute English sessions via video conferencing tools (Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet).

  • Curriculum Implementation: Utilizing the Paper Airplanes curriculum to improve students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

  • Cultural Exchange: Fostering a supportive and empathetic environment that encourages cross-cultural understanding and confidence-building.

  • Progress Tracking: Providing feedback on student performance and participating in brief monthly reporting to ensure learning goals are met.

Work Schedule & Commitment

  • Time Commitment: Approximately 2–3 hours per week (including session time and preparation).

  • Duration: Tutors are generally asked to commit to one full semester (approximately 12–16 weeks).

  • Location: Fully remote; sessions can be conducted from anywhere with a stable internet connection.

Required Profile

  • Language: Near-native or native English proficiency.

  • Skills: Patience, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills.

  • Technical: Reliable internet access and familiarity with video conferencing platforms.

  • Passion: A genuine desire to support refugees and individuals in conflict-affected areas.

The Impact of Peer-to-Peer Learning

By volunteering, you become part of a global network of educators. Peer-to-peer models have shown a high success rate in conflict zones because they provide not just education, but a vital link to the outside world.

Volunteer Benefits

  • Global Network: Connect with a diverse community of volunteers and students from around the world.

  • Professional Development: Gain experience in ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction and cross-cultural communication.

  • Meaningful Impact: Directly contribute to the empowerment of individuals striving for a better future despite systemic challenges.
