This role requires exceptional analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure during critical weather events.

Locations and Work Environment

Multiple vacancies are available in locations such as Anchorage, AK; Miami, FL; Mobile, AL; and North Little Rock, AR, among others. Meteorologists work in modern WFO facilities equipped with advanced radar, satellite, and modeling systems. The positions require rotating shifts since the NWS operates 24/7 to ensure continuous weather monitoring. During severe weather events, meteorologists may need to work extended hours to provide timely warnings and forecasts.

Conditions of Employment

Applicants must meet specific requirements before joining the NWS as a Meteorologist. Key conditions include:

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Low-Risk Security Clearance must be obtained before employment.
  • Applicants must register for Selective Service if applicable.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be necessary for certain candidates.

Additionally, employees must maintain high mental alertness and readiness to work under stressful weather conditions, especially when public safety is at stake.

Required Qualifications

To qualify for Meteorologist positions, candidates must meet educational and experience standards set by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Applicants can qualify through education, experience, or a combination of both.

Educational Requirements:

  1. A degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related natural science is required.
  2. Coursework must include:
    • Six semester hours in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics.
    • Six semester hours in analysis and prediction of weather systems.
    • Three semester hours in physical meteorology.
    • Two semester hours in remote sensing or instrumentation.
    • Six semester hours in physics with laboratory sessions.
    • Three semester hours in differential equations.
    • At least nine semester hours in fields such as physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, climatology, or computer science.

Candidates with equivalent education and experience combinations may also qualify.

Specialized Experience Requirements

Depending on the GS grade level, applicants need varying levels of specialized experience:

  1. GS-05: Meeting the basic education requirement qualifies candidates at this level.
  2. GS-07: Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or one year of graduate-level education.
  3. GS-09: Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 or a master’s degree in Meteorology or a related field.

Specialized experience includes using meteorological data to assist in preparing forecasts, monitoring weather conditions, and issuing warnings.
