Cooks at the VHA are usually responsible for preparing meals for patients (following modified diets) and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Meal Preparation: Preparing, cooking, and serving a variety of main dishes, sides, and baked goods in large quantities for regular and modified diets (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, soft).

• Dietary Compliance: Strictly adhering to recipes, menus, and production sheets provided by dietitians to ensure therapeutic diet requirements are met.

• Safety & Sanitation: Maintaining high standards of sanitation, safety, and food handling in the kitchen area, including proper storage, temperature control, and cleaning of equipment.

• Inventory: Assisting with receiving and storing food and supplies, and monitoring inventory levels.

• Equipment Operation: Operating commercial kitchen equipment such as institutional ranges, ovens, mixers, fryers, pressure cookers, and steam kettles.
