Role Overview: Strategic Land Use & Engineering

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a Senior Land Use Engineer to provide technical expertise in the Northern Virginia District. This role is pivotal in managing the intersection of private land development and the state’s transportation network. You will serve as a Responsible Charge Engineer, ensuring that complex development plans comply with engineering standards while mitigating traffic impacts on the community.

Core Responsibilities & Technical Oversight

• Development Plan Review: Conducting high-level technical analysis of complex rezoning requests, master plans, and site plans. This includes evaluating detailed waivers and exceptions to ensure engineering soundness.

• Policy Development: Assisting in the creation and monitoring of statewide engineering policies and procedures to improve land use practices and street acceptance standards.

• Engineering Studies: Overseeing comprehensive traffic studies and data collection to support long-term strategic planning for the district’s roadways.

Required Qualifications & Success Factors

• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.

• Technical Mastery: In-depth knowledge of geometric design, drainage, traffic operations, and the comprehensive zoning process.

• Legal Knowledge: Ability to interpret and apply local, state, and federal transportation laws, including the Code of Virginia.

• Professional Stature: Experience applying VDOT design standards and specifications is essential. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred for the Responsible Charge designation.
